VW's SUV portfolio stands at only 2 models at the moment.

According to a report on Auto Express, VW - in the future - will have one SUV in each segment, as compared to the two model lineup at present which includes the Touareg and Tiguan. The car maker is especially missing out on the B-Segment SUV space which sees products like the Renault Captur (the current segment leader), Ford EcoSport, Nissan Juke, Honda HR-V etc.

The car maker is keen to tap into the B-segment SUV space.

Dr Heinz-Jakob Neuser, board member for technical development at VW, told the publication that the company is working on smaller SUVs based on the VW Golf and Polo. Seen here is a speculative rendering of a Polo-sized SUV with design inspiration coming from the T-ROC.

At the 2014 edition of the Geneva Motor Show, the car maker presented the T-ROC concept, describing it as a Golf-sized SUV based on the capable MQB platform. Prior to that, at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show, VW revealed the Taigun mini SUV, based on the Up! small car. However, according to Neuser, VW is still in the consideration stage for these concepts, and a definitive green light for production has not been given yet.

A compact SUV, irrespective of its underpinnings, is indeed the need of the hour for the German car maker in India, whose sales continue to rest on the Polo and Vento. Despite producing a record number of cars last year at the Chakan plant, VW India exported nearly every second car made at this plant, a clear indication that its domestic sales have potential for growth.
