Expected to debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA 2015) later this year.
Based on the new 35up platform, the car is expected to weigh less, by up to 170 kg. But it will be feature-laden with wireless charging, a touchscreen-based iDrive system, a Bower & Wilkins audio system, etc. It will also be the second production vehicle to sport laser headlamps in the BMW lineup, with the first being the i8 hybrid sports car, due for an Indian launch this month.
Engine options will include the current inline-6 and V8 engines, while smaller 2-litre, 4-cylinder units could make it to the base variants. The 6.6-litre V12 is being reported to be axed due to emissions incompatibility.
An earlier report suggests that BMW could even look at offering a third wheelbase option, apart from the regular and LWB variants. This could go on to compete against the recently launched Mercedes Maybach S Class.
Codenamed G11 for the regular version and G12 for the LWB, the car is expected to make an appearance at the Frankfurt Motor Show later this year, while an Indian arrival is expected next year.
Competitors: Jaguar XJ, Mercedes S Class, Audi A8
Expected price: INR 1 crore upwards, ex-showroom
