Will be offered with a 5+2 seating option.

Speaking to CarAdvice, Volkswagen America CEO Michael Horn has confirmed that they are working on the next generation Tiguan, which is set to debut in 2016-17. Other than the plethora of changes in tow for the compact SUV, he promises that the Tiguan will sport a distinctive styling.

RM Design has rendered the next Tiguan, borrowing design cues from the Cross GTE concept.

At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show, Volkswagen announced the Cross Coupe GTE Concept, which previews future styling for upcoming crossovers. Keeping that in mind, RM Design has rendered the next Tiguan, borrowing design cues from the concept car. If Volkswagen were to follow this direction, the design of the next generation Tiguan would be a departure from the current model's aged look.

Like Volkswagen's latest products, it will sit on the MQB platform, which is comparably lighter than the current model's platform. Mr. Horn further divulges that a 7-seater option will also be offered, which is inline with recent reports.

With increased boot space, 5+2 seating option and promise of more interior space, the 2017 Tiguan is expected to be slightly longer than the current model.

For the next generation model, Volkswagen is targeting a boot space of around 500 liters for better practicality. So, with the increased boot space, 5+2 seating option and promise of more interior space, the 2017 Tiguan is expected to be slightly longer and bigger than the current 4.4 meter-long model.

Engine options might include high output 3- and 4-cylinder petrol and diesel engines for improved fuel efficiency over the current Tiguan. Also in the cards is a plug-in hybrid variant as well as a powerful "R" variant. Volkswagen will also equip the Tiguan with their 4MOTION all-wheel-drive system for better handling and road traction.

The current generation Tiguan was not sold in India. However, VW India could explore the possibility of launching the new Tiguan, especially since it will get 5+2 seating, a feature buyers look for in the INR 20-30 lakh SUV segment.
