Seeks to save 2 lakh lives from road accidents.
A new law, dubbed the Road Safety and Transport Bill 2014, to be proposed by the central government will seek to create close to 10 lakh jobs by inducing investment into the sector. The bill also seeks to put into place a certain system that will help ease the processes for vehicle registration and license procurement amongst other measures.
An independent agency will be set up in order to facilitate vehicle regulation, road safety, license issuing and automating driver testing amongst other measures. The bill also proposes ease in cross-registration of vehicles between states in order to help those migrating between states.
In order to curb the issue of overloading of commercial vehicles, the government seeks to install electronic weigh bridges at toll gates across national highways. Apart from these measures, the bill also looks to increase fines for various offences including drunken driving, signal violation, etc.
Reducing accidents and increasing efficiency of the road transport sector is also a focus of the bill. At present, at least 5 lakh accidents kill close to 1.4 lakh people across the country in a year. The bill seeks to save close to 2 lakh lives over a period of 5 years after coming into effect.
