As the launch of Proton's first global car, known so far by its codename P2-30A, nears, the Malaysian automaker has trademarked the names 'Iriz' and 'Aero' with the country's intellectual property corporation.

The P2-30A is expected to be called the Iriz.

While the name Iriz leaked much earlier, Aero is new. It's to be seen whether the new moniker would be used for the hatchback or a new model in the future.

Aero could be the name of a top-end variant of the Iriz or could be used for an entirely different model.

The Proton P2-30A is reported to be powered by 1.3-litre and 1.6-litre VVT (Variable Valve Technology) petrol engines. Both manual and automatic transmissions are in the offing. The bigger engine is rumored to offer 110 PS and 148 Nm of torque giving the VW Up! rival a top speed of 180 km/h.

A leaked features list revealed that the Proton Iriz will be equipped with safety features like 6-airbags, ABS, EBD, TCS, ESP, BA and HHA (Hill Hold Assist). The hatchback is said to have achieved 5-star rating in the ASEAN-NCAP and given that it will be sold in Europe, a good Euro-NCAP rating is also expected.
