Hyundai India launched the new Elite i20 today with prices starting at INR 4.89 lakhs, ex-Showroom, New Delhi. Following is a comparison of the new i20 with its competitors.

The Elite i20 is shorter than the outgoing model by 10 mm, and measures 3,985 mm making it the second longest car after the Punto (3,989 mm). However, thanks to smart packaging, the i20 has the longest wheelbase at 2,570 mm. The Hyundai is also the widest car here at 1,734 mm. In terms of height, the Elite is taller than the Polo, but shorter than the Swift and Punto Evo.

Powered by the 1.4-liter U2 diesel engine, the i20's 90 PS matches that of the new Polo (the 105 PS GT TDI comes only next month) and comes close to the Punto Evo Sport. On paper, the Swift is the least powerful at 75 PS and 190 Nm. Torque wise, the i20's 220 Nm comes second to the Polo's/GT TDI's 230 Nm/250 Nm. The Hyundai is the only car to get a 6-speed manual gearbox as the rest come with a 5-speed unit.

The Maruti is the most fuel efficient of the lot at 22.9 km/l followed by the Elite i20's 22.54 km/l (for Era and Magna variants) and 21.76 km/l (for Sportz, Sportz (O) and Asta trims).

Price wise the i20 is cheaper than the Polo, but is more expensive than the Swift and the Punto Evo. The base Elite i20 costs INR 64,000 more than a Swift LDi.

All cars are powered by a 1.2-liter engine, though the Polo and Punto can be had with a 1.2 TSI or a 1.4-liter engine respectively as an option. Excluding the GT TSI (introduction next month), the Punto 1.4 is the most powerful at 90 PS, followed by the Swift and Elite i20. In terms of torque, the Elite i20 nearly matches the Punto 1.4's 115 Nm, though the GT TSI is the benchmark at 175 Nm.

All cars come with a 5-speed manual gearbox but for the GT TSI which uses a 7-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. At 18.6 km/l for the Era and Magna variants, the Elite i20 matches the Swift in the efficiency department.

Price wise, the i20 is INR 10,000 cheaper than the Polo but INR 47,000 more expensive than the Swift LXi.
