Jaguar have started testing the next generation XF, ahead of a launch which is reported to happen sometime in 2016.

Introduced in 2007 as a replacement for the S-Type, the XF's competitors (E Class, 5 Series and A6) moved on to next generations, and have even been refreshed (or in the case of A6, a facelift is imminent). Jaguar plan to up the game with the new XF, which would be based on the company's all-aluminium iQ platform (the same platform that underpins the upcoming XE).

The platform upgrade alone could save the sedan as much as 100 kgs, reports Auto Express. Further weight savings could be achieved by using the new Ingenium engine family of four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. More sportier versions of the new XF would use the 3.0-liter V6 and the 5.0-liter V8 supercharged engines from the F-Type, the report adds.

Doing transmission duty on the car would be the new 9-speed ZF automatic gearbox, which is also used on the Evoque. The XF, much like the current generation model, will be offered with rear wheel drive and all wheel drive configurations.
