Malaysian automaker Perodua is working on a new entry level small car expected to be called as the Perodua Axia. The Axia is essentially a rebadged Daihatsu Ayla that is on sale in Indonesia.

The Perodua Axia is a rebadged Daihatsu Ayla.

The new Perodua hatchback will slot below the Myvi, in positioning. Visually the Axia differentiates itself from the Ayla by means of a redesigned front fascia. Funtastiko.net has uploaded spyshots of a sportier variant of the upcoming hatchback which features an inverted trapezoidal single piece front grille as against the two-part hexagonal element of the model that was spied earlier.

The sportier variant gets clear lens taillights and aggressive bumper.

In addition to the bigger grille, the latest prototype also features larger foglamps, aggressive front air-splitter, clear lens rear combination lamps and a sculpted rear bumper with pseudo air channels.

The interior of the Perodua Axia is sufficiently differentiated from that of the Ayla. The revised dashboard is complete with a new instrument console, multi-function steering wheel, new AC vents and controls knobs.

Under the hood will be a 1.0-litre three-cylinder all-aluminium petrol engine that is borrowed from the Ayla. The motor would come mated either to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic gearbox, with power and torque outputs of 66 PS (65 bhp) and 87 Nm respectively.

The Perodua Axia would be manufactured at the company's upcoming plant near its existing unit at Rawang, Malaysia. The launch is expected later this year.

Competitors: Kia Picanto, Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat (Spark)
