UK – MY2014 Suzuki Swift ditches diesel engine, gains equipment

Nithyanandh K, As a toddler, those wheeled machinery fascinated me even before I knew what they’re called as! So here I'm, petrolhead by birth, Mechanical engineer by qualification and automotive reporter by profession!

The Suzuki Swift has just received MY2014 (Model Year 2014) updates in the UK and the 1.3-litre DDIS diesel engine sourced from Fiat has been dropped from the new range. The company claims that less than 10% of customers are interested in the diesel Swift.

The update mainly deals with addition of equipment to existing variants (SZ2, SZ3 and SZ4). The UK-spec 2014 Suzuki Swift (except Sport) gets standard foglamps and LED daytime running lights. All variants get gear shift indicator, tyre pressure monitoring system, navigation and DAB digital audio system. The SZ3 and SZ4 variants offer the 4×4 system.

The only visual enhancement is the new Amethyst Grey Pearl Metallic exterior color option for 1.2-litre engined variants.

Design wise, the interior also remains untouched.

The Euro-5 compliant 1.2-litre four-cylinder K-Series petrol engine continues to push out 94 PS and 118 Nm of torque but Suzuki claims that tweaks to the motor achieves a better fuel economy of 19.9 km/l under combined European driving cycle and CO2 emission of 116 g/km (for 2WD MT variant). The transmission options are 5-speed manual and 4-speed automatic.

The Swift Sport is powered by a 1.6-litre petrol motor capable of 136 PS and 160 Nm of torque. Fuel economy and carbon emission stand at 15.5 km/l and 147 g/km respectively. It’s matched to a 6-speed manual transmission.

Since its launch in May 2005, the acclaimed global hatchback clocked sales of over 3.4 million units while UK sales since inception is around 95,000 units.

The 2014 Swift comes with a nominal increase in the price.

In related news, the facelifted Maruti Swift is expected to be launched in India in the coming months.
