The faired version of the Z1000, the Z1000SX, gets more electronic equipment and a very sporty attitude. The new panniers are bigger than the previous ones, but at the same time closer to the bike (35 mm on each side) to reduce aerodynamic drag and improve the stance.

The 2014 Z1000SX sports a revised traction control system Kawasaki dubs as the 'K-TRC', which is adjustable to three levels, and has two engine maps. The engine performance is also improved, with peak power output raised from 138 hp @ 9,600 rpm to 142 hp at 10,000 rpm, and a torque of 111 Nm @ 7,300 rpm.

The bike also features remote adjustment for the preload of the shock absorber.

The 2014 Kawasaki Z1000 retains the same frame as the current bike, but the motor is a softly updated mill used on the 2014 Kawasaki Ninja 1000. A ride-by-wire throttle provides the possibility of switchable riding models - 70% to 100% power. The bike is loaded with ABS, traction control, single-piece radial calipers and a radial master cylinder.

The motorcycle's digital dashboard features a bright LED tachometer.

Compared to the outgoing model, the Z1000 gets an elaborately folded headlight cowl, a very muscular fuel tank, big radiator shrouds and a thin tail. These design changes move the Z1000's visual weight forwards.
