The current generation Hyundai Verna has been around since April 2010, when it was launched at the Beijing Auto Show. Based on Hyundai's Fluidic design language, the Verna has been a sales success, especially in India, China and Russia. Even three and a half years after its introduction, the Verna continues to dominate its segment in India and sold an average of 4,382 units every month from January to September 2013.

Note that the Chinese model differs slightly in looks to the global vehicle, but mid-cycle refresh programs for both models are pending.

Since the Verna is into its mid-life period, Hyundai is preparing a facelifted model and here are the first spyshots from China, courtesy of Auto 163. The test mule has its front, rear and sides camouflaged suggesting that there would be changes to these areas. But it has to be mentioned that Hyundai was testing the Elantra facelift in a similar manner and towards the end there were very minute changes to the lights and the bumpers. As a result, do not expect the refreshed Verna to sport a comprehensive design makeover.

In terms of powertrain, we expect the facelifted Verna to continue using the same set of engines. The current lineup in India starts with the 1.4-liter VTVT petrol engine mated to a 5-speed manual transmission and a 1.4-liter CRDI diesel engine which comes with a 6-speed manual transmission.

The refreshed Verna should continue using the same set of engines.

Moving higher up, the Verna can be had with a 1.6-liter VTVT petrol engine available with a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission. The volume seller of the lot is the 1.6-liter CRDI diesel which comes with a 6-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic transmission.
