The VW Cross Polo has been spotted testing on the Indian roads since early May this year. Thanks to the numerous spy shots available, we could see what this car was really about.

Thanks to reader Royal Luthra for these spy shots of the Cross Polo from Haryana, we can see what the changes to the exterior are.

The Cross Polo is a rough-road version of the hatchback sporting a few exterior elements such as a skid plate, plastic moldings on the side, a revised front bumper, anodized roof rails and a slightly increased ride height. We think there would be no interior changes apart from a few badges with the 'Cross Polo' name written on them.

Autocar India now reports that the Cross Polo could be launched on August 21 (the coming Wednesday) and the manufacturer would do a soft-launch of the car on that day.

Previously, we reported that the Cross Polo received its ARAI approval and that VW India could launch the car anytime soon. Our source had also told us that the Cross Polo would be launched in a single variant only (Highline) and with the 1.2-liter 3-cylinder diesel engine.

Autocar says in their report that a more upmarket Cross Polo with a bootlid mounted spare wheel and a 1.5-liter diesel engine could be launched next year. This 1.5-liter 4-cylinder unit would essentially be the Vento's 1.6-liter with a shorter stroke length. We expect to see it first on the VW Polo GT TDI (which is another expected launch from VW India).

This Cross Polo with a bootlid mounted spare wheel was envisioned by Shoeb. The spare wheel is not part of the length of the car and hence the sub-4 meter norms continue to apply.

Skoda India launched the Fabia Scout last year (Fabia Scout is the equivalent Cross Polo from Skoda), however with little success. Apart from selling few units, the Fabia as such is about to discontinued in India.
