The five-seat Mercedes GLA Class is the three-pointed star's answer to the BMW X1 and Audi Q3, though spyshots reveal its more of a Volvo V40 Cross Country rival.

Based on the Mercedes Concept GLA that gathered crowds at the Auto Shanghai this year, the production GLA Class will debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show that begins on the second week of September. The GLA is the fourth variant in the NGC lineup (that comprises of the A-, B- and CLA-Class). The family is built on Mercedes' modular MFA platform.

The concept version was powered by a 2L turbocharged petrol engine putting out 208bhp through an all-wheel drive system. We expect the GLA Class to borrow other powertrains from the A Class variant line.

The GLA Class could cost about 5,000 Euros over the A Class. Compared to the hatchback, it will get a more rugged styling and ride a bit higher to provide drivers a better view of the road ahead. It appears as if Mercedes hasn't developed a completely new top-hat and has instead enriched the A-Class' exterior with SUV elements.

Mercedes is also preparing an AMG version that would use the 355bhp 2L turbo petrol engine from the A45 AMG.
