Datsun will be relaunched on July 15 in India with the sole aim of selling affordable motoring to the Indians, Indonesians, Russians and the South Africans. In India, they’ll launch a small car based on the Nissan Micra first. It will be shown on July 15, while the official sales may only commence in 2014. For now, we'll call it by its codename, the Datsun K2.

This is another one of Shoeb’s (our design artist) drawings, based on the official sketches released yesterday.

As you can see, Datsun, whose brand value may not be as strong as Nissan, will be stylish nonetheless. According the official sketch, the car would lose out on features such as body colored ORVMs and door handles, and movable rear headrests but we'll have to see the car before we can confirm anything.

Another interesting design element we noticed is towards the rear. There seems to be a haunch where the taillamp starts and this is something you notice on the Nissan Micra also. The rear windows do not feature any quarter glass, which is a sign of cost cutting, but do not impact the looks or the performance of the car.

Overall the first Datsun does look promising. But what will the interiors be like? It is very likely that the gearbox and the parking brake would be moved to the center console, thus liberating room for an additional passenger on short journeys.

The Datsun K2 is expected with a starting price of about 3.5 lakhs. It will play in a segment dominated by the Hyundai i10, Chevrolet Beat and Maruti Wagon R.
