The Honda Activa-I, the most affordable automatic scooter from Honda's stable has been launched in India today.

The Activa-I becomes the fourth member of Honda's automatic scooter family which comprises of the Dio, Activa and the Aviator. Honda already has a dominant market share of 50% and the new scooter is aimed at increasing it further.

Honda wishes to classify the Indian automatic scooter segment into three broad categories - Moto Scooter (Dio), Family Scooter (Activa and Aviator) and Personal Compact Scooter. Honda says that the Activa-I is its first personal compact scooter in India. According to the company, this segment caters to almost 25% of the automatic scooter sales in India.

Beige metallic Honda Activa-I

The Activa-I is aimed at easy maneuverability in city conditions for both male and female riders. In terms of looks, the scooter has a slimmer physique than rest of the Honda scooters. The big turn indicators located on the sharp edged front apron form the highlight of the design. Overall, the design language is conservative and unisex in appeal.

The Activa-I is equipped with the Combi Brake system (CBS), tubeless tires, maintenance free battery, viscous air filter and an under seat storage capacity of 18-liters. The scooter tips the scale at 103kg and has a ground clearance of 165mm.

Rear three quarter of the Honda Activa-I

The Activa-I is powered by the same 109cc air cooled engine as the Activa, which produces 8bhp of power and 8.74Nm of torque. The motor employs the Honda Eco technology (HET) which debuted in Honda's range of scooters earlier this year. HET adopts various measures to achieve a claimed fuel economy of 60km/l.

Purple and beige Honda Activa-I

The scooter is available in 4 color options - Beige Metallic, Pearl Sunbeam White, Alpha Red Metallic and Purple Metallic. It will be on sale across India by the end of this month.

The Honda Activa-I is priced at Rs. 44,200 (ex-showroom Delhi) which is about Rs. 3,000 cheaper than the 2013 Activa and about Rs. 500 cheaper than the Dio. With the additional capacity of the newly inaugurated third plant near Bengaluru, Honda has equipped itself the much needed additional production capacity.

The new scooter is expected to enable Honda to consolidate its market leadership in the automatic scooter segment.
