Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles have showcased a concept vehicle named e-Co-Motion at the Geneva Motor Show.

The literature is very fancy, it described the creation as conquering the extremes - compact yet maneuverable. The concept can ingest eight hundred kilograms of payload and is powered by electric motors.

Dr. Eckhard Scholz, Speaker of the Brand Board of Management says electric vehicles could be the future in light commercial vehicle segments in megacities of the world. Goods would arrive at city limits on freight trains or hybrid trucks and then passed on to electric vehicle delivery vans for distributing or delivering. As their routes are predictable, battery charging and maintenance would be simplified.

VW explains the e-Co-Motion as having high maneuverability with a small footprint, very good visibility and seating ergonomics with easy ingress, egress and walk-through, a low cargo floor height and large cargo capacity for easy loading.

The nature of the e-Co-Motion is "fully independent of existing models" meaning that speculation of it previewing the next generation Transporter line is busted. The vehicle has a length of 4.55 m, width of 1.9 m and height of 1.96 m. The cargo capacity stands at 4,600 litters.

The vehicle's body is split into two parts - the lower zone contains the battery pack, drive unit and the gearbox while the upper zone is reserved completely for the cargo. The clever space utilization has lead to the ability to house several types of body versions such as cargo box, refrigerated box or low platform. Volkswagen says this way the customer can decide the application and not the manufacturer.
