HM Ambassador sub-4m variantHindustan Times has reported that Hindustan Motors is currently developing the sub-4m version of the Ambassador that may finally launch in early 2014.

Initial test mules of the compact Ambassador were spotted testing in 2010. Pune-based Onix studios were rumored to be design consultants to HM for the program. Past the initial euphoria, we've not seen even traces of this variant on media reports or testing on public roads.

The company was rumored to be working on a 21st generation Amby in 2010 featuring a sleek design and modern interior, but since then there's been no further updates on this matter either. Hindustan Motors wielded the Ambassador platform once again to the launch the Veer, a single cab pickup version, in select markets, in 2011.

February 2013 was a memorable month for HM as sales of the Amby drove past 500 units. Besides convincing cab operators, sales of the 50 year old nameplate surged in the personal segment too. To keep it on the growth path, the company is readying a BS4 compliant engine which is expected to launch by June.

With the new variant added to the lineup, the company hopes it can shift 5,000-5,500 units of the good old Amby into India in the next financial year.
