The Chevrolet Spin compact MPV has been officially launched in Indonesia.

We all know that Indonesians love MPVs. We recently brought you the report that the Suzuki Ertiga recorded its best ever monthly sales in Indonesia, in the month of January. So it's only logical for GM to launch the Chevrolet Spin, a compact SUV engineered by GM Brazil, to not miss the action.

The three row MPV will be locally manufactured at GM Indonesia's manufacturing plant at West Java (the same place where Honda's upcoming factory will make the Brio-based Spin rival). The MPV offers a choice of three engines, two petrol motors and an oil burner.

The entry level variant will be powered by a 1.2 litre 4 cylinder petrol engine which is mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine puts out 86 bhp of power and 115 Nm of torque. The motor is similar to the unit that finds application on the Beat and the Sail models.

The higher end variants are powered by a 1.5 litre petrol engine that comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Tiptronic function. The power output of the engine stands at 109 bhp and the torque available is 142 Nm.

The diesel option is something which is familiar to the Indians but no prices for guessing though. The 1.3 litre diesel engine is the GM's version of Fiat MultiJet. The engine is good for 75 bhp/190 Nm and is coupled to a 5-manual box.

The Chevrolet Spin starts at 139 million Indonesia Rupiah (around Rs. 7.74 lakhs). Apart from catering to the local demand, the West Java plant will also export the MPV to Thailand, Philippines and South Africa.

There is no doubt in our mind that the Chevrolet Spin is modern and younger than the Enjoy MPV that is earmarked for India. If only GM had brought the Spin here!
