Audi India began selling the smallest member of its SUV family, the Q3, in June last year with regional launch parties targeting young executives.

In a matter of five days, the first consignment of 500 examples were all taken. Audi continues to bring the diesel-engined Q3 through the CBU route (2.0 TDI), and while there’s no word on the local assembly, Audi India has announced the petrol variant today.

The motor here is a familiar one – the four cylinder 2.0 TFSI – which on the Q3 is tuned to make 211hp and 300Nm of torque between 1,800 and 4,900 RPM. The engine is paired to a seven-speed S-Tronic transmission letting the car accelerate from 0-100 kph in just 6.9 seconds, and reaching a top speed of 230kph.

The fuel efficiency of this engine is rated at 11.72kpl (ARAI certified) and the it has the rare distinction of winning the International Engine Of the Year five times in a row in its class. A start-stop system is standard.

The petrol engined Q3 may not be a volume magnet, but it lowers the cost of ownership of an Audi, if you don’t drive your luxury car every day. Since the initial flurry of demand is largely behind them, Audi will now want to fill up the blanks in the Q3 lineup and arm itself for any eventuality with respect to swaying fuel preferences of its customers.

The Audi Q3 2.0 TFSI is priced at 27.37 lakhs (ex-showroom Maharashtra).

The Q3 has contributed in a big way to close the gap to BMW, which is the current leader of the luxury market. Audi assembles the bigger Q5 and the Q7 at the Aurangabad plant.
