The Corolla was introduced in 1966 and Toyota has sold more than 39 million units of the mid-size sedan so far. The Corolla played a major role in making Toyota one of the largest car makers in the world.

The car was the international best seller last year and if the global sales figures for the first nine months of 2012 are anything to go by, the Corolla looks set to repeat the success this year also.

English.chosun.com website reports that, according to Autodata, Toyota sold 8,65,000 Corollas worldwide by the end of the third quarter of 2012 making it a clear topper of the sales charts.

Ford's Focus comes in at the runner up place while the Toyota Camry which is another success story for Toyota rounds up the podium.

The VW Golf which ranked 3rd last year is relegated to 4th, however having launched the new Golf, VW could fight back for the 3rd spot in the last quarter of the year.

Other cars in the top 10 which are sold in India are the Chevrolet Cruze which holds the 5th position, Ford Fiesta which takes the 8th place while the VW Passat and VW Jetta come in at 9th and 10th respectively.
