The V12 motor has always been the BMW 7 Series' crown jewel since the car's second iteration in 1986.
BMW recently celebrated 25 years of V12 power, however it seems that the future of this prestigious motor is uncertain since BMW has not yet decided whether to use it or not in the next generation of the flagship car.
The global trend of downsizing and the usage of force induction technologies to tuck under the ever stringent emission limits could spell doom to the monstrous motor. The V12's gas guzzling character is another factor that would likely make BMW think twice before continuing to use this engine.
BMW Australia's product and pricing manager Mr. Christoph Priemel said there is an uncertainty in the future of the V12 engine in the next gen 7 Series which is expected to be out in 2016. However he personally believes that the V12 powered 760Li will still find takers given the prestigious status of the variant.
The 760Li is significantly more expensive and less fuel efficient than the 750Li which is proving to be the popular variant of the 7 Series in the recent years.
If BMW decides to put the V12 motor to rest, the new 7 Series would see a downsized motor which uses BMW's TwinPower turbo technology to produce nearly as much power as the V12.
Mr. Priemel also added that, "In terms of efficiency, dynamics, and safety features, this car (next gen 7 Series) will be absolutely superior both compared with the competition and also leading the pack when it comes to the BMW range overall."
