Now, it is time for yet another offshoot from the MFA Platform to head to India. Yes, we are talking about the technological avant-garde, the Mercedes A Class.

Our friends at MotorBash have caught the new Mercedes A Class testing on the streets of Pune with minimal camouflage. The 2013 Mercedes A Class was launched internationally a few months back and it created history by clocking 70,000 bookings just from Europe. This makes it the most successful product launch in the history of Mercedes.

Unlike the Mercedes B Class, which is only launched with a petrol engine, Mercedes India will launch the A Class with a 1.8-litre turbo-diesel motor that has 134 ponies roaming the crankshaft, mated to a 7 speed dual clutch transmission.

The A Class packs technology by the bucket loads and can even give the super luxurious S Class a run for its money in some respects.

The test mule caught here wears an AMG body kit indicating that Mercedes will initially launch the A Class with an AMG kit; a similar strategy was followed for the launch on the ML Class and the B Class, a 'top-down strategy' as a marketing man will coin it.

The price tag will be between 18-20 lakhs, making it the cheapest star on sale in India. Expect the launch sometime in the middle of 2013.
