European Skoda Rapid showcased at Sydney Motor Show
Nithyanandh K, As a toddler, those wheeled machinery fascinated me even before I knew what they’re called as! So here I'm, petrolhead by birth, Mechanical engineer by qualification and automotive reporter by profession!
Skoda has showcased the European version of the Rapid at the Sydney Motor Show.
The Rapid for the European market is very different from the Indian version which is basically a Vento with a Skoda face. The European version of Rapid, re-engineered with new looks and interiors, becomes the Czech brand’s first car to bear the new family look.
The European Skoda Rapid has vastly different exteriors and interiors which feel modern and upmarket compared to the Indian Rapid. The European Rapid represents the company’s journey into a new era by sporting the next generation Skoda logo.
The car will be launched down under by next year and will initially be offered with a choice of two petrol engines. The 1.2 litre TSI which develops 104 bhp/175 Nm will be available in base trim while the range topping variant will be powered by a 1.4 litre TSI which belts out 120 bhp and 200 Nm of torque. The latter is found on the Indian VW Jetta TSI.
The diesel variants will be made available at later stages. The car’s new design direction is an evolution of the current theme. The important change comes in the form of the front grill which now has a piece of bonnet protruding out with a logo placed on it.
The possibility of the European Rapid making its way to India perhaps with a different name remains as a speculation but what we know is, the next generation Skoda Laura and Superb, will be adhering to the same design philosophy.
