The Dearborn-based automaker has confirmed the launch of the mini SUV for the European markets in the next 18 months.

The EcoSport is built on the Ford B3 platform that underpins the Fiesta and B-Max models. For Europe, Ford will match it with the 1L Ecoboost engine and is banking on the car's design, fuel efficiency and high seating position as selling points.

Ford is attacking the financial crisis with a range of new launches in different segments. The poor financial conditions in Europe could see Ford losing up to 1 billion dollars this year. Ford is applying the One Ford plan in Europe and is aiming to bring 71 percent of the European vehicles on to global platforms from the current 41 percent.

Ford has also confirmed the launch of the next generation Mustang in Europe. The new Mustang is said to roll out in 2015 as a global model.
