The dual unit headlamps have always been the very identity of the E Class for the last few generations, but the luxury car maker decided to axe the tradition with the upcoming facelift of the E Class.

The spy shot of the headlamp unit confirms the development providing more details.

The headlamps still are two in number but are housed in a single enclosure. However the DRL that highlights the borders of the lamps will make it look like a twin unit when viewed from a distance.

Apart from the headlamps, the bumper also is redesigned. The lower air dam is now trough shaped and the bonnet has some subtle modifications.

The tail lamps and rear bumper also will get a new design.

Since its only a facelift, no major changes under the skin changes are expected and the current set of running gear will be continue to be offered. In addition, Merc could slip in a 1.6 litre four cylinder motor which will be sourced from Renault, their technology partner.

The facelifted E Class is expected to be unveiled some time in the early 2013 and pop up in India either in late 2013 or early 2014.
