Toyota Camry in IndiaWe are receiving truck loads of spyshots from Mumbai where Toyota is aggressively testing the new Camry. Toyota India showcased the all-new Camry at the 2012 Auto Expo in New Delhi for the masses to see and feel.

As a result, the test mules that are spotted now only wear mild camouflage to just hide the badge. Our regular reader Rutwij Brahme sends us spyshots of the Camry testing in Chembur area of Mumbai.

When we met Toyota Kirloskar Motor’s management, we were told that the assembly of the new Camry will begin in Bidadi in July and sales would start in August. The Camry will not be provided a diesel engine as such an option does not exist anywhere in the world. TKM can choose from two petrol engine options - a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter V6.

More importantly, because the Camry will be a CKD operation, we expect it to be priced better than it is now. However the excise duty hike on CKD vehicles and the fall in petrol car sales could leave the Camry in an unfavorable drop off point.

If there is a plan to revive the Camry brand in India it can only be possible using a diesel engine.
