Mercedes C ClassWith the launch of the new BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, Mercedes is feeling the heat. Although the car was facelifted in 2011, nothing really exciting was added to the old W204.

To keep the interest bubbling, the three-pointed star has updated its range in the UK to give it some sporty attributes. The new lineup consists of Executive SE, AMG Sport and AMG Sport Plus models.

The base model is the SE which is available in two body styles - Saloon and Estate. The updates include 16-inch alloys, a ‘sports grille’ and LED daytime running lights. You can buy a ‘Luxury Package’ for £2,000 (1.75 laks) which includes 17-inch alloys, some chrome garnish on the exterior along with three-slat grille. The interiors feature brown ash wood finish

Two additions have been introduced to the lineup - AMG Sport and AMG Sport Plus. AMG Sport features 17-inch AMG alloy wheels and halogen headlights.

Not satisfied? You can buy the AMG Sport Plus which includes 18-inch bi-colour AMG alloys and an AMG boot spoiler. The interiors get AMG sports seats with contrasting red stitching, red seat belts and red-piped AMG floor mats. Cost? £1000 (87,529 rupess) above the AMG Sport.

2013 Mercedes C-Class interiorOwn the coupe? You can buy the £530 (46,390 rupees) AMG Handling Pack which further tightens the steering, engine and throttle responses.

Are you the environmentalist? You can buy the new BlueEfficiency model which has a slightly less powerful but more fuel efficient 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine. It develops 152bhp and delivers 20.36 kmpl with CO2 emissions of 138g/km.

We like the way Mercedes has managed to offer something to all parts of the society. Be it petrolheads or environmentalists, you have been taken care of. But have they covered enough area to take on the new BMW 3 Series?

Only time will tell.
