Journos and guests at a presentation event held by Fiat recently were in for a surprise when they were shown a clay model of a compact SUV coming in the future. The event was held at Turin, Fiat's home in Italy.

Fiat 500X

This new compact SUV will be called the Fiat 500X. It sits on Fiat's reliable Panda platform which underpins the 500 and the 500L.

As with most compact crossovers the 500X has a higher ride height and large tires. In proportions, it is much larger than the 500 but the design's starting point is the 500, no doubt.

The front bumper, rear bumper and side skirts are clad using plastic. It has chrome finish in places like the door handles and the tip of the exhaust.

The Fiat 500X will be driven by the company's trademark MultiJet and MultiAir engines. It also benefits from 4WD technology and front wheel drive as standard on the base variants. The new Fiat 500 X replaces the Fiat Sedici (a rebadged Maruti Suzuki SX4) and may land in Brazil to challenge Ford's Ecosport.

The Fiat 500X is likely to arrive on the market next year, priced from £13,000 (11.1 lakhs). Its Indian entry is still not confirmed but we'd love to see Fiat localize the Panda platform and bring the Panda, 500X and 500L in the sub-10 lakh price point.
