Mahindra XUV500 gets 4 stars in ANCAP crash tests

Kaustubh Shinde

Kaustubh Shinde, They say sooner or later your passion finds you. Sometime in late 2009, I started writing for IAB and ever since then it has been a roller coaster ride for me. An amazing experience that has taught me a lot, taken me to new places, driven some great cars and met some amazing people. When you don't find me on IAB (very rarely), you will find me either at a coffee shop or an eatery or at the nearest gadget store. Hope you enjoy IAB as much as we do!

Mahindra XUV500 ANCAP 4 star safety ratingA few weeks ago, we brought you the news that Mahindra XUV500 is flexing its muscle for an Australian debut. However, before entering Australia, the XUV500 needs to pass the Australian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP) with good marks. And it has!

Mahindra's first attempt at making a monocoque body has helped them accomplish many feats in the market, to their reputation and in learning so much on building a car. The XUV500 has earned a four star safety rating from ANCAP. Although Mahindra would have wished for a full five star rating, they expected a four star before the assessments started.

The Indian-built mid-size SUV scored 26 points out of 37 in the crash test, including 10/16 in the frontal offset crash test and the default 16 out of 16 that is awarded to all SUVs in the side impact component. The outcomes of the test were:

  • In a frontal impact, XUV500’s passenger compartment lost structural integrity.
  • The leg protection was very poor. The excessive rearward movement of the brake pedal could lead serious leg injury.
  • The crash test caused a rupture in the fuel line.
  • The test also caused the tailgate to open.

This is the highest rating given by ANCAP to an Indian manufacturer. Mahindra’s Pik-Up dual-cab ute (Scorpio Getaway) got 2 stars in 2008 and 3 stars for the upgraded model earlier this year.

The Mahindra XUV500 will be fitted with six airbags and electronic stability control as standard when it goes on sale in Australia later this month.
