It is believed that the Hi-Cross will lead to the next generation X-Trail like how the Invitation Concept, it shares display space with, is likely to progress into a Livina successor. Nissan however says there is no ambiguity on the Hi-Cross's purpose and it is only a study.

The Hi-Cross has three rows of seats for seven occupants and is powered by an hybrid drivetrain. A 2-liter gasoline direct injection engine is coupled to an electric motor, powered by a Leaf-derived lithium-ion battery pack, that leads to the performance potential of a 2.5-liter engine without using as much fuel.

The hybrid drivetrain started out as a front wheel drive layout and has gained the capability to drive all four wheels through one motor and four clutches. The reduction is through Nissan's new XTRONIC continuously variable transmission which alone can reduce fuel consumption by 10% compared to its predecessor.

The concept has a 2780mm wheelbase. It is 4660mm long, 1850mm wide and 1670mm tall, and rolls on 21 inch alloy wheels.
