Since the slipping of its market share back in October 2011 to a critically low 29 percent, Maruti Suzuki has turbocharged its comeback with the launch of the new Swift and Dzire models.

The next short term goal is to get four of its products into the top 5 selling cars in India. This is how the rankings are as of now -

  • The Alto is the best selling car in India with 2.73 lakh units shipped since April last year.
  • The Swift is the second best selling model clocking 1.33 lakh units in the same period, overtaking the cheaper Hyundai i10
  • The Wagon R has sneaked up into third position, shifting 1.32 lakh units.
  • The fifth position fight is between the Indica and the Dzire. If the Dzire goes on a sales rampage this year with its boosted value package, the Indica will be eaten up for breakfast.

Maruti is not resting on its success. It will continuously upgrade old models and introduce new segment offerings. The Ertiga coming early next month is Maruti diving into the B+ MPV segment for the first time. The XA Alpha Concept showcased at the recently concluded Auto Expo may lead to the entry of a mini SUV, another segment that Maruti would like to dictate terms to.

Product refurbishments are coming along well, the Ritz is going under the knife for a mid-2012 launch and the A-Star recently received tweaks to the rear seat and interiors.

Do you think Maruti should give the slow-selling SX4 a comprehensive overhaul as the C-Segment has not exactly been life in paradise? Or do you think Maruti should restrict itself to compact cars, bring new models, variants and powertrains?
