2013 Volkswagen Beetle cabrioletVolkswagen India showcased the 2012 Beetle at the New Delhi Auto Expo in January, however did not launch it at the event. Probably the Germans are waiting for the Cabriolet version to make its international debut at the New York Motorshow in April so that they can offer it as a variant?

Our friends at Motortrend have managed to snap test mule of the cabriolet version of the 2012 VW Beetle during its winter testing.

The new Cabriolet will get a stiffer body structure to reduce scuttle shake. More interestingly, VW plans to keep the fabric soft top on the new model as well. The company is not adopting a metal folding top to keep it in tune with its history. Same engines will be carried over from the coupe. There will be one diesel engine, as well as two petrol engines with power ranging from 138 HP to 197 HP. A 6-speed manual or an optional 6-speed DSG will shift cogs to transfer the power.

Surprisingly, despite of the monstrous price tag, VW Beetle is a very successful car in India. VW India is probably waiting for the cabriolet version to make its international debut so that both models could be introduced in India. Of course, the 2012 Beetle will continue to carry its expensive price tag in India as VW has no plans to adopt CKD operations.
