After a reasonable silence from the Tata Nano camp, we are back to square one. DNA is reporting that another Tata Nano caught fire in Subanpura locality of Vadodara district on June 1.

The engine of a Nano car caught fire near the Samta police outpost in Subanpura locality gutting down the front seat. The vehicle belonged to Mr Mayank Doshi.

This is not the first time Vadodara has experienced an incinerating Nano. Last April, a brand new Nano got engulfed in a fire on National Highway-8 near Boriyavi village of Anand district.

The recent development certainly opens up a lot of questions about the Tata Nano. Last year, when this ‘Fire Catching Nano’ issue was at its peak, Tata Motors ordered comprehensive tests between September and October 2010 to check for any faults in the product. The solution was to offer new safety features to the exhaust and electrical system for the owners wished.

Tata Motors has constantly maintained the stance that the faults were specific to the affected cars rather than a general or design fault that existed on all Nanos.

But a series of 7 incidents across India is definitely a matter of worry. Why is Tata Motors not able to bury this issue once and for all? Should these ‘Added Safety Features’ which are optional as of now be made compulsory for all Nanos?
