The Volkswagen Up’s Indian foray with the XL1 concept’s uber-frugal diesel engine maybe a heated boardroom discussion topic in Chakan and Wolfsburg at this moment, but there are countries the Up’s reached where Volkswagen’s marketing team is busy coining the term “creative absurdity.”
They first covered cars on the streets with VW Up! car covers. They then mounted an example scaling a building in France. This campaign shows the compactness of the vehicle in a manner never seen before.
If they had used the rugged-looking Cross Up!, customers may have believed its gradability is 90%, thankfully the marketeers were quick to sense that possibility and used a three-door model.
Aren’t these Germans are ready to go to any heights to get your attention?
Finally the day has come when VW has unveiled the 5-door version of the popular budget car – Up!; Not that you should be surprised because you saw it before much thanks to SRK’s renderings. The VW Up! made its debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show in a three door version.
The five-door Volkswagen Up! has the same dimensions as the three-door version. So the wheelbase is the same 2.42 m along with the 251-liter boot.
VW commercial always tickle your funny bone whether they are made in India or abroad. The company is known to push the boundaries of creativity (and sometimes beyond) with their advertisements. In this new VW Up! commercial the company is mocking all things that are BIG.
The Up!, though taller than the Polo, is the smallest car in the VW portfolio. Clearly, the advert goes to great length to explain how small is the new big. Have a look.
It is no secret that Volkswagen fills the deep void below the Polo using the Up! unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show two months ago. The VW Up! needs a diesel engine before it can flood Indian roads.
Another imperative requirement is four fully functional doors that allow access to the cabin. The production models showcased had two (plus one for the boot). The Cross Up! concept had five doors but no one had seen a production-ready version with extra doors, until now!
Volkswagen is featuring the five door variant on commercials and promotions. The video provides a glimpse of the model in question, expected in India in the next couple of years.
We are quite excited about the VW’s cheapest entrant in the Indian market – the VW UP! Revealed at the Frankfurt motorshow, the UP! promises to the change the game in the B segment. Its sleek design, efficient engines combined with VW legendary build quality, UP! will prove as a worthy contender in the market.
Volkswagen is equally excited with UP!, as it will be the group’s smallest car yet. However, the company is trying some innovative marketing ideas to demonstrate the practicality of a small car. Earlier we brought you a naughty tactic adopted by VW to demonstrate how UP! will liberate a lot of parking space due to its compact size.
Now, in a effort to demonstrate the huge amount of space inside, VW stuffed the UP! with 16 chicks. No wait. 15 chicks and one dude.
These girls are not acrobatic experts that can origami themselves into a matchbox. In fact, these are actually VW workers from the factory. They managed to fit two girls in the 252-litre boot, seven on the back seat, four in the front seats, two in the foot wells, and one more on the dashboard.
Prices for the Volkswagen Up! have been announced in the UK and they start from £7,995 which is approximately 6 lac INR. We must note that even the entry level variant is loaded with many features and the standard equipment includes body colored bumpers, day-time running lights, CD player and 14 inch steel wheels. ABS and Airbags are standard features across the range.
It is powered by a 60PS 1.0 liter petrol engine connected to a five speed transmission.
At £8,970 the Move variant features central locking, air-con and power windows. Start Stop system is optional at an additional £360 combined with which the car can run 23 kmpl of petrol.
Above these is the High edition which boasts of a more powerful 75PS 1.0-liter engine and heated front seats, leather wrapped steering, infotainment system and 15 inch alloy wheels.
There are two special editions called the Black and White both based on the High trim featuring chrome mirror caps, unique seat upholstery and 16 inch alloy wheels.
Deliveries in the UK will begin around November-December 2011.
IndianAutosBlog.com reader Sudeep sent these snaps of the Volkswagen Up! from the Frankfurt International Airport last evening along with a note implying his interest in its Indian entry.
Like Sudeep there are thousands of people lining up to test drive and experience the cheapest offering from VW yet. The five-door Up! hits European markets during 2012 and we’re expecting unrelenting VW India to fly down an example to the Auto Expo 2012. The Up! is designed for the customer unable to afford a Polo but aspires to drive the German-engineered Volkswagen.
The car’s rear is built using a Brio-blushing all-glass hatch, C-Shaped tail lights and a no-fuss bumper. The design theme for the Up! should have been a razor blade – simple and functional. For the Indian market Volkswagen will have the brand in upper case pasted on the bottom left of the glass hatch. The Indian car will have smaller wheels, five doors, bits from the BlueMotion car and higher ground clearance.
The Up is a tall boy with thin seats, simple dashboard interface, small wheels, compact turning radius and a tiny footprint. These are the contents of a perfect city car. Under the hood Volkswagen could use the 1.2-liter diesel from Polo generating lower output. The Chevrolet Beat and Hyundai i10 are its prime targets and Volkswagen’s rise to the top of the world by 2018 rests partially on the shoulders of the Up!.
The Frankfurt Motorshow was quite significant for the VW group because they showcased their smallest car yet – the UP.
The UP will be VW answer to the Fiat 500, Toyota Aygo et all. VW made sure that the UP was presented to the world in a grand fashion so they booked a huge floor space to display not one, not two but nine UP models.
But being VW, that huge expenditure of moolah was not enough. VW is known for its creative advertisements and below-the-line marketing activities. Be it a ‘Talking Newspaper’ or absurd banners on the streets, VW has pretty much been there and done that.
So for the UP! VW decided to target the cars parked outside the Frankfurt Motorshow. What they did was……wait…..why don’t you have a look yourself
