World’s second largest car manufacturer – Toyota, has’nt been quite successful last year around (after seeing the first loss in 71 Years!) But now has some news to cheer! The cheer comes from India, in the form of Corolla Altis’ leadership. The Corolla Altis which was launched here in September ’08, had become an instantaneous hit and soon took the title of market leader since October 2008. It has won the hearts of many a customer and has successfully regained leadership (Overthrowing Honda Civic) in the premium sedan segment (C-Segment) of the Indian automotive market. The 10th generation Corolla Altis has achieved 42 per cent market share in the period September – December 2008 in the premium mid-sized car segment.
Eying a big potential for luxury bikes in India, where tastes are changing from mass-market machines to high-end bikes, Honda and Bajaj are looking at launching new sportsbikes in the country in the next couple of months.
There had been a sudden surge in the number of International Sportsbikes brands entering the Indian market, over the past two years. Initially the trend was set by Kinetic with the launch of the 250cc, v-twin-powered Hyosung Comet in India back in 2005. Then it was Yamaha, which launched the Yamaha R1 in India and the MT-01 cruiser in 2007. Soon later followed by the Italian motorcycle giant Ducati, who launched an array of superbikes costing up to almost 50 lakhs, and finally Suzuki joined the troop in late-2008, with its Hayabusa superbike and the Intruder cruiser.
The Swedish carmaker – Volvo has also now taken the ‘Long wheelbase route’(like its German counterparts), by launching its S80L In Chinese market. The S80L is essentially a Long wheelbase – Limousine version of the Volvo S80. It is a full 140mm longer than a standard S80, with all the extra length dedicated to increasing rear legroom.
Mercedes-Benz India presented its AMG range of performance cars in India at the DLF Golf and Country Club, Gurgaon. The mean machines from the Mercedes-AMG range have made their mark on and off the racing circuits worldwide and are now (surprisingly in these troubled times of recession) making their appearance in the Indian market, just the way we predicted its December coming.
