Thanks to one of our readers AR, we’re able to show you brochure shots of the Maruti Swift Dzire notchback that launches today. The vehicle shares its platform with the new Swift and has a tiny boot to qualify for excise duty benefits. The engines and features have also been carried over with subtle changes to the interiors.

The new Dzire, measuring 3.95m in length, is available in a choice of seven colors. It has a 42 liter fuel tank and a turning radius of 4.8m. It may not be a beauty contest winner but the 1.3L diesel engine under its hood returns an impressive fuel economy of 23.4kmpl while the 1.2L petrol gives 19.1kmpl on the manual and 17.4 kmpl on the automatic transmission variant.

Thanks to The Hindu/Smart Buy who have tested the new Dzire on the Buddh circuit in the last few days, we’re able to share details here on the vehicle.
1) The ZXi and ZDi trims get 15 inch alloys as opposed to 14 inchers on the old edition.
2) The diesel variants are powered by the same 1.3-liter engine producing 190 Nm @ 2,000 rpm and 75 PS @ 4,000 rpm.
3) The K12 petrol engine lives on delivering 87 PS @ 6,000 rpm and peak torque of 114Nm @ 4,000 rpm.
4) Due to a better power-to-weight ratio, fuel economy numbers have scaled up. The petrol engine at 19.1 kmpl is 6.7% more fuel efficient, and the diesel at 23.4kmpl up from the earlier 21.7kmpl. These are ARAI certified numbers
5) Maruti offers AT on the petrol models – A drop of just 2kmpl is expected.
The chopped-boot Dzire will be launched in the first week of February.
Indian Autos Blog reader Rajesh Dogra has captured images of the new Swift Dzire as it was being unloaded from its container in Jammu today. The new Dzire has already started marching towards dealer yards and the launch is expected to unfold in the weeks ahead or dare I say days ahead.

The interior of the new Dzire is laid out in the same manner as the Swift. Features such as steering-mounted audio controls, dual tone dashboard, five-speed manual transmission….to capsule it, the interior is a photocopy of the Swift’s!

GoaOnWheels have published a smashing scoop on their front page today thanks to petrohead Abishek Bathla who snapped the compact Dzire on the Delhi-Noida toll road. The new Dzire is under four meters long as the government offers excise benefits for cars that measure under four meters in length and use downsized engine. Maruti has figured out a way to instill some style into the 2012 Dzire -the boot lid is tapered off Kizashi style!
The new Dzire is undoubtedly Maruti’s first launch in 2012 followed by the Ertiga MPV. We expect Maruti to come out with an announcement on the launch date in the next few weeks.

For those of you in the dark, Maruti Suzuki is planning to launch a sedan version of the new Swift to battle it out in the new ‘Compact Sedan’ segment that will emerge in 2012.
Essentially, these sedans will be under 4 meters to take advantage of tax breaks, at the same time provide more boot space than a conventional hatchback. Currently, the only sedan sold in this format is the Indigo eCS. The Verito (Logan for rest of the world) and the Manza are likely to join this race next year.

Coming back to Maruti Suzuki, the company plans to design a compact sedan under four meters based on the current Swift which may be called ‘Swift 3.99’. Vicky claims to have gained access to the specifications of the Swift 3.99. Here are the details:
- It would be 3.9m in length, 1.6m wide and 1.5m tall
- The wheelbase will be 2.43m only
- The base variant of Swift 3.99 would run on 165/80 R14 tyres and more expensive variants would use 185/65 R15 rubber.
- It will weigh around a ton
- The petrol variant will be powered by 1.2L K series engine developing 87PS of max power at 6,000rpm and 114Nm of peak torque at 4,000rpm.
- It will only be offered in 5 speed manual
- Expected mileage is 18.5kmpl
How will the Mahindra Verito CS look?
We don’t know whether the Swift 3.99 will completely replace the Swift Dzire or will sell alongside it. However do you think the Swift 3.99 can compete against Verito CS and Manza CS?
The Swift Dzire may enrage the true petrolheads with its odd ball looks and wayward handling but it certainly knows how to set the sales charts on fire. Based on the old Swift platform, the Swift Dzire was the best selling sedan for months before Maruti got entangled in the labor crisis.
But the old Swift is now history and has been replaced by an even better one. So why should the Dzire carry the old platform forward?
It comes as no surprise that Maruti is busy developing a new Swift Dzire based on the Swift but with a twist.
Maruti plans to take advantage of the sub 4 meter tax breaks to make the new Dzire more price competitive. The new Swift Dzire CS could be showcased at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo and launched in Q1 2012 sporting a 1.2L K series Petrol Motor and 1.3L Multijet Diesel.
But don’t think that the ‘Swift 3.99′ as it is known tentatively, will have the game to itself. Two other compact sedans – Tata Manza CS and Mahindra Verito CS are also in the process of development and could see an early next year launch. Besides the Indigo CS is already present in the market.
Is this an emergence of a whole new segment and could the Swift 3.99 dominate the segment of compact sedans? What are your opinions?
