It will have two engine choices for either 2WD or 4WD. The 2.0-liter MIVEC petrol engine may not be the practical option for diesel-driven markets which is why Mitsu is offering the 2.2-liter MIVEC Clean Diesel engine married to a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

Mitsubishi is working on a plug-in hybrid variant for a 2013 launch that has an astonishing 800km range with CO2 emissions of 50g/km.

Our sources tell us Mitsubishi is unlikely to launch the new Outlander in India this year.

The image shows a face of the crossover – possibly the new Outlander. However the company refers to the concept as an ‘an innovative premium vehicle’. A teaser picture of the vehicle shows a similarity to the PX-MiEV II SUV concept unveiled at the Tokyo motor show last November. The Concept PX-MiEV II was Mitsubishi Motors’ idea for a mid-size plug-in hybrid PHEV model that offers a long cruising range demanded by mid-size and larger vehicles.

The concept that will be unveiled at Geneva will showcase Mitsubishi’s new, engineering-driven design language for the brand. Mitsubishi refers to it as an ‘an open design’ concept, meant to be flexible enough to suit any specific vehicle requirements. The concept will feature a new 4N1 Clean Diesel engine and green plastics, as well as it will benefit from the innovative PHEV technologies.

The concept will jump start the company’s ‘Jump 2013′ business plan that calls for greener vehicles with a re-focused design language and a global availability.

A concept version of the Outlander Plug-in hybrid was showcased at the Tokyo Motor Show. Also known as Concept PX-MiEV, the car featured a plug-in hybrid powertrain with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two 60 kW (80 hp / 81 PS) electric motors.

The battery alone can sustain the vehicle till 50 km. Once the charge starts depleting, the car activates the petrol engine to charge the battery. At high way speeds, the electric motor and the petrol motor work together to give you maximum power. Mitsubishi estimates the PX-MiEV II would have a combined fuel consumption of 60 km/liter.

This is Mitsubishi’s first high-volumes launch in many years. The Pajero Sport is likely to lock horns with the Toyota Fortuner and Ford Endeavour and could be the Japanese company’s turn-around model as the lack of right products and diesel engines has made it a pedestrian participant in the Indian market.

The statement also dwells on a new HM passenger vehicle (we assume on the Winner platform, spied recently by ICB) waiting for approval from ARAI and commercial vehicle variants on the Ambassador platform.

Interiors receive a fair share of goodies with red illumination for the dashboard, rear view camera, a display integrated into the auto-dimming mirror, electrically powered leather seats, auto leveling HID headlamps, 12-speaker 860 watt Rockford Acoustic surround sound system, auto climate control and rear AC with independent controls.

On the updated model, Mitsubishi has added brake override system that cuts power to the engine when the brake and accelerator is applied simultaneously.

The new Pajero is available in four colors – Quartz Brown Metallic, Black Mica, Cool Silver Metallic and Warm White Mica.

Unlike the Toyota Etios which is developed specifically for India, Mitsubishi Motors has developed this sub-compact hatchback for global markets (like the Nissan Micra/Sunny). Thus, the styling is kept simple and clean to be accepted by people across the globe.

The Mirage is powered by a 1.0-liter three-cylinder engine with variable valve timing and a start/stop system to combat the rising fuel prices. The company claims that the Mirage gives an astonishing 30 km/l.

The Mirage will be on sale in Thailand from March 2012. No plans of bringing it to India have been revealed by Mitsubishi India. However, the parent company has confirmed that it will be sold globally in both in emerging markets and developed nations.

On sale since 1982 and now running in its 4th generation, Autoten.com, using scanned images and information taken from Japanese car magazines reports the newest Pajero is likely to continue using the same engines.

The design makeover is rumored to be a gradual transition and a hybrid variant is expected to join the arsenal into its first year of launch. Besides the five-speed AT, an eight-speed automatic transmission for a better fuel economy is also in the works according to the same report.

Embracing the trend is Mitsubishi which will showcase its new small car Mirage at the Tokyo Motor Show. The Mirage is the production version of the Global Small Concept that was first shown in Geneva earlier this year. This B segment hatchback measures 3,710mm long, 1,665mm wide and 1490mm high and is specifically developed for the emerging markets.

As one can see, the production version is nowhere near to the concept version that was showcased in Geneva. The styling is considerable toned down to makes sure that the cost doesn’t rises exponentially. The idea behind Mirage is plain and simple – a cheap urban runabout Period!

With the rising fuel prices, Mitsubishi is gone to great lengths to make sure that the Mirage delivers the best possible mileage – a mindboggling 30km/lt. The company has taken the help of lightweight materials, a reduction in rolling resistance and higher efficiency through detailed improvements to the engine, transmission, brakes, tires, and aerodynamics, all aimed to help reduce fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Fuel saving technologies such as regenerative braking and an auto start-stop system will also be available in the Mirage.

The pony power will be delivered by 1.0-liter to 1.2-liter gasoline engines mated to a new generation CVT gearbox. The Mirage will be on sale  in Thailand in March of 2012, more and more markets will be added as the time passes.

Back home, Mitsubishi India is an a dormant mode with no new models on cards. The company is just launching special editions and variants to survive. The Mirage will certainly turn a few heads in the Indian automotive scene.
