With the labour union fiasco, the company’s market share fell to as low as 38.44 percent in third quarter of year 2011 from 45 percent in the starting of the year.

Maruti Ertiga at the Chennai launchThe internet is abuzz with news that the Maruti Ertiga has mopped up a mind-blowing 10,000 bookings in five days of its launch.

The Ertiga stations on an extended Swift platform, sharing its complete interior with the Dzire. It also debuted a new 1.4-liter K Series petrol engine alongside the familiar 1.3-liter MultiJet engine that many term as the national diesel engine of India.

Maruti has priced the petrol variants of the Ertiga very aggressively anticipating low demand initially, while the diesel, understandably, has been priced a bit higher that most expected. The split between the two variants in this initial round of bookings is yet to be verified though some Maruti officials were expecting 8/10 cars to be diesel.

2012 Maruti 800Is an era about to end? Is the car that started it all, ready to bid adieu to the Indian roads? DNA reports that Maruti Suzuki is ending the production of 800 this month. Although the 800 sells a decent 2,000 odd units every month, Maruti Suzuki is looking to make a move on.

The Maruti 800 was launched in 1983 as a cheaper alternative for the Ambassadors and Padminis. Back then cars were expensive and the 800 was the first affordable car for the Indian masses. It was the dream of Sanjay Gandhi that every Indian should be able to afford a car for his family.

Does the diesel engines hold the future of the Indian passenger car market? With rising petrol prices, most manufacturers are shifting the bulk of their production from petrol to diesel. Many manufacturers who do not have a diesel engine in their portfolio have majorly bleed their market share heavily in the recent months while those who have highly efficient diesel variants have gained market share.

Maruti Suzuki does not have a diesel engine in its portfolio. The manufacturer was saved by Fiat’s highly efficient diesel engine –Multijet. With the help of Multijet, Maruti Suzuki has managed to retain its dominance but just marginally. The company’s market share has been consistently falling despite posting record sales.
