Bookings open for the Jaguar XF facelift; Deliveries begin next month

Jaguar dealership in some parts of India are accepting bookings for the XF facelift. We spoke to the JLR dealer in Chennai who said that deliveries begin at their operations in the first week of December. IndianAutosBlog.com readers were the first to be notified of the new XF’s whereabouts in India.

The reworked XF is available at prices slightly higher than the outgoing model. Here are the variants and prices (on road, Chennai).

3.0-liter diesel – 62 lakhs

5.0-liter naturally aspirated petrol – 78 lakhs

XF-R – 5.0-liter supercharged petrol – 98 lakh

At the launch of the Range Rover Evoque held today in Mumbai, Jaguar also displayed the XF facelift shown below at the other end of the showroom floor. Upon requesting dealer executives on details of the new model, we understood that the market introduction is due shortly, likely during the next 4-6 weeks.

The updated XF sports a revised grille, bi-xenon headlights having integrated LED daytime running lights. A new hood and redesigned front fenders complete changes to the front fascia. The theme extends to the rear using new LED taillights.

Likewise in the cabin, seats have been ‘improved,’ the switchgear revised, instrument cluster redesigned and an infotainment system with touch screen interface supplemented.

Land Rover Evoque & facelifted Jaguar XF are November launches

And we thought that 2011 has almost come to an end for auto buffs. Boy! were we wrong. After establishing concrete plans to assemble Freelander 2 in India, Jaguar-Land Rover (JLR) is all set to storm the Indian markets. According to EconomicTimes, JLR is gearing up for end of the year onslaught by launching 2 new models.

The very first one will be the Evoque, a baby Range Rover, the second one is speculated to be the facelifted XF which was showcased at the New York Motor show.

The Evoque launch is a no brainer because recently Land Rover India updated its website with all the details of the Evoque including the brochure. Carwale predicts that the launch could happen as soon as 4^th of November. The Evoque will head to India in both 3 door and 5 door versions. There are speculations that all the Evoque units that were allocated for India have been sold out till the 2012. The Evoque is all set to storm the market at a stunning price of 50 lakhs.

There is no exact information available on what the second model might be. But speculations are rife that Jaguar will bring the facelifted XF in India. The new XF has been on sale in international markets since quite some time now and it is about time Jaguar updates the India line up.

The facelifted XF has some subtle changes to the design language. The new XF has caught the German fever of daytime LEDs integrated in the headlamps. The headlamps themselves are sharper and more aggressive.

The bulge on the bonnet has become more prominent. The rear features a new LED tail lamps cluster with a thin chrome strip joining the two tail lamps. The engine options available will be a 3 liter V6 diesel engine, a naturally aspirated 5 liter V8 petrol engine and a supercharged 5 liter V8 petrol engine.

Jaguar could also launch the 2.2L entry level diesel model in India to rake in some volumes. The expected price of the new XF will be around 40-50 lakh rupees.

Jaguar looks to adopt All Wheel Drive to fight the Germans

In a surprising move, Jaguar’s global brand director Adrian Hallmark has informed CAR & DRIVER that it plans to ditch its rear wheeled drive philosophy and adopted all wheel drive on majority of its models in the next 3 years. The last all wheeled drive Jaguar was the X type which was not really a bespoke Jag because it was based on the Ford Mondeo platform.

This surprising move is because Jaguar is continuously losing its market share to the Germans in its prime market – USA. In order to stay afloat, the leaping cat needs to change its core philosophy and change with times.

The Jaguar XF (5 Series competitor) and XJ (S-Class rival) will the first ones to adopted the AWD architecture and the time frame given is the next 3 years. Converting a rear wheeled drive car into al all wheeled drive one is very expensive and almost cost prohibiting. But Jaguar is ready to dump its funds and take the risk. The XK will not be touched for now.

The XJ is doing well internationally against the other vehicles in the segment, but there is still a lot of room for improvement. The XF hasn’t done well since its 2008 launch in the international markets. The addition of all-wheel drive should help boost sales numbers and improve ratios against brands like Mercedes, VW and Audi.

Every time you see a Jaguar XJ you are reminded of how much there is to desire in this world. How much is still there to be achieved. It shrinks many of our big accomplishments and makes them feel meager.

The car’s looks remind you of richness, wealth and exclusiveness in just a glimpse and you never fail to say “WOW!” every time you see it. Happens rarely that a humongous limo could make you appreciate it more for it looks than for the luxury it offers, the XJ is a gorgeous limousine and among the very few to enjoy that status.

To take things a further step ahead California based Newport Convertible Engineering (NCE) has worked on the XJ, chopped off the roof and converted the car into a full size 4 door convertible. A topless model never fails to get the second glances!

How the car looks roof-less is left for you to decide but we appreciate NCE for considering cars like the XJ as projects. They are specialists in chopping off almost every car, anything from a Prius to even a Range Rover.

JLR plans to bring 2 concepts at the Frankfurt Motorshow

Jaguar Land Rover, now a Tata Motors owned company, is planning to shift gears at the Frankfurt Motor show. Each brand is planning to bring something new at the motorshow. More so, each company will put these models in production in the near future.

Let’s start with Jaguar. Jaguar is expected to reveal a new sports car in concept. Rumor has it that it will be a small sport car below the XK. It will be the show stopper from Jaguar and will directly compete against the Porsche Boxter.

The car could be potentially named the XE and will be powered by V6 petrol engines, boosted by turbochargers. However, there could also be a XF station wagon that the market is waiting for since a long time. Only time will tell what is this secret leaping cat.

Let’s move on to Land Rover. This brand is even more ambitious than its sister. Land Rover is planning to display a concept that will be the modern day Defender.

The current Defender dates to 1983 and is a direct descendant of the original 1948 Land Rover Series. So you can imagine how desperately the brand needs to rejig the Defender. The new Defender could be based in the LR3 chassis. The company wants the new defender to score a bigger slice of the utility market.

Back home, there are good chances that the XE will be launched considering its bigger sister XK is already in the market. However, Tata Motors is mum about bring the Defender brand in India.

Tata Motors and JLR plan to jointly develop engines

Way back in 2008, Tata Motors bought the iconic British marquee Jaguar-LandRover for 2.3 billion dollars and then managed to turn things around in less than three years. The Indo-Brit partnership is now ready to take things on the next level. In the company’s 66th annual report, 2010-11, Mr Ratan Tata announced that Tata Motors Ltd and Jaguar Land Rover will jointly develop engines in the future.

The idea of this co development program is to optimize the synergetic strengths between JLR and Tata Motors in India and United Kingdom. As JLR currently gets their engines from Ford, this will be the next step of back-end integration for it and the Indian owner. It will help in cutting costs on manufacturing the vehicles and making them cheaper for price-sensitive markets such as India.

Tata Motors is also planning to prepare JLR to take on the German manufacturers by investing at £5bn over the next five years to improve the quality of the car brands’ products and designs. Furthermore, after assembling the Land Rover Freelander in Pune, Tata Motors has plans to assemble other JLR products in India as well. Tata Motors is also planning to have a assembly plant in China in the near future.

Along with launching new products and variants, JLR will also focus on increasing their presence in Russia and Brazil.

JLR opens new assembly plant in Pune

Jaguar Land Rover today opened the first assembly plant in India at Pune. Assembling vehicles imported from UK, the first vehicle to come off the assembly line is the Land Rover Freelander 2 shipped from the Halewood facility in Liverpool. The facility can assemble other cars, details of which are not clear. Both Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles are expected to be assembled at this plant.

JLR is planning an onslaught of models of the next four years to reach the top be on top in the luxury car market. Currently it sells Jaguar XJ, XF,and XK, the Land Rover Freelander 2, Discovery 4, Range Rover Sport and Range Rover in India.

27TH May 2011: Jaguar Land Rover today officially opens its first assembly plant in India.

The facility at Pune in the Maharashtra region of India, will assemble Land Rover Freelander 2 vehicles supplied in Complete Knock Down (CKD) form from Jaguar Land Rover’s Halewood manufacturing plant in Liverpool, UK.

The inauguration ceremony was led by Carl-Peter Forster, Chief Executive Officer and MD of Tata Motors and Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive Officer of Jaguar Land Rover.

Mr. Carl-Peter Forster, said: “Today marks a significant step in our growth strategy for the Indian market. The opening of this plant demonstrates close co-operation between the parent company TATA Motors and Jaguar Land Rover and we are keen to develop this further”.

Dr Ralf Speth, said: “Jaguar Land Rover is delighted to have officially opened our first assembly facility in India. We are excited about the prospect of assembling cars in Pune for the Indian market where we have achieved significant growth since we opened our first showroom in 2009. It is a great time to be expanding our operation in India due to the increasing demand for luxury products and the strength of the Indian economy.”

The facility in Pune will be subject to Jaguar Land Rover’s mainstream launch quality processes and will be overseen by experienced manufacturing and quality managers who have moved to India from the UK.

The award winning Freelander 2 is available in India in two variants, the TD4 SE Automatic and the SD4 HSE Automatic. The prices start at Rupees 33.89 Lacs (ex-showroom price in Mumbai, pre-octroi).
