VW 1.0 L TSI engine to be locally manufactured
Volkswagen Group's 1.0 L TSI petrol will power the upcoming Skoda and VW cars arriving starting 2021.

Confirming this develop to Autocar, Bernhard Maier, CEO, Skoda Auto said-

Our 1.0 TSI petrol is a very cost-efficient engine and we are going to build it in India in the future.

VW Group has identified 'cost' as a primary objective of the new plan. Local production of the 1.0 L turbocharged petrol engine will play an integral role in achieving lower costs while meeting fuel efficiency and emission targets. The engine will be offered in the new SUV planned for India, as well as other products that will utilise the MQB A0 IN platform.

The 999 cc 3-cylinder turbocharged engine belongs to the EA211 family. It powers a host of cars from the VW Group including the Volkswagen Polo, Skoda Fabia, Skoda Karoq, and more. The engine is available globally in 94 hp and 115 hp variants. It will replace the current 1.6 MPI naturally aspirated petrol and the 1.2 L TSI turbocharged petrol engine. The company claims that it will be one of the most fuel-efficient engines in the market.

The report adds that VW has scrapped its plan to localise production of the 1.5 L TDI engine in India. The engine will reach the end of its life by 2020 as India moves to adopt the BSVI emission norms. The company feels that revising the engine to comply with the new rules will be an expensive affair and will result in an increment in the price of the products employing this engine.
