The Hyundai Santro is part of the prestigious club of cars which put a generation of Indians behind the steering wheel. Hyundai is keen on reviving the iconic moniker with the Hyundai AH2 if customer polls are going for it.

More than 1.36 million units of the Hyundai Santros were sold in India during its life of 16 years.

For months now it has been speculated that Hyundai is likely to pin the Hyundai Santro moniker on the Hyundai AH2. The company is running a campaign where customers can suggest names for the new car, reports BusinessLine. Speaking to the business publication recently, Y K Koo, MD and CEO, Hyundai Motor India Limited, said: “If ‘Santro’ gets the maximum votes, we may keep it.”

Continuing the original Hyundai Santro’s legacy of a tall-boy design, the Hyundai AH2 will serve as a replacement for the Hyundai i10. Reports say that the old Hyundai i10’s HA platform will serve as the basis for the Hyundai AH2. The new hatchback will employ an updated version of the Hyundai Santro’s ‘Epsilon’ four-cylinder engine. Hyundai will offer two transmission choices: 5-speed manual and 5-speed automated - a first for the South Korean automaker.

The Hyundai AH2’s market release is said to take place this August. The new city car is reported to go head-on with the Tata Tiago and Maruti Celerio. That could mean a starting price of somewhere around INR 4 lakh (ex-showroom) filling the white space below the Hyundai Grand i10, priced from INR 4.73 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).
