Yamaha Motor Company is reportedly working on the next-generation 2019 Yamaha YZF R25. The new R25 will be launched in global markets sometime next year. In April 2018, renders of the new Yamaha R25 surfaced online, detailing the speculated changes.

The 2019 Yamaha R25 is likely to receive new design and advanced tech features. The new model is expected to be on the lines of new Yamaha R15 V3.0 and the 2018 YZF R1/R6. The new R25 is likely to feature updated USD forks, LED headlamps and an updated tail section. Previous render images show the bike with a faux RAM air intake between the headlights.

Japanese publication Young Machine reports that the 2019 model will feature variable valve actuation (VVA) and might get a new chassis as well. The Yamaha R25 is limited for Southeast Asian markets like Indonesia and Malaysia. A more powerful 321 cc, Yamaha R3 is sold in other global markets including India.

The 2018 Yamaha R25 for the Indonesian market only received colour updates with new graphics. The next-generation model will get substantial updates, which are also expected to trickle down into the India-spec model (Yamaha YZF R3). The current R25 receives a 249 cc, twin-cylinder, liquid-cooled, DOHC, fuel-injected engine that is capable of churning out a maximum power of 36 PS at 12,000 rpm, while developing 22.6 Nm of peak torque at 10,000 rpm, mated to a 6-speed transmission. A diamond-type chassis suspends this engine. It rivals the Kawasaki Ninja 250 and the Honda CBR 250RR.

Yamaha India launched the updated 2018 Yamaha YZF R3 at the Auto Expo 2018, priced at INR 3.48 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). The bike gets sticky Metzeler Sportec M5 tires and standard dual-channel ABS. In the domestic market, the R3 competes against KTM RC 390, Kawasaki Ninja 300, TVS Apache RR 310 and the Benelli 302R.
