A team-BHP reader encountered a test mule of the Hyundai AH2 (New Hyundai Santro) at close quarters. The upcoming hatchback is expected to arrive in August this year and could mark the revival of the Hyundai Santro nameplate in India.

The Hyundai AH2 will be bigger and more spacious than the Santro.

Close-ups of the Hyundai AH2 test mule reveal a vertically stacked tail light cluster with the turn indicator and reverse light placed below a bulb-type stop lamp. This could be one of the top-end trims of the hatchback as it features a rear wiper. While the interior remains hidden, the images do reveal front seats with fixed headrests.

A report published last week mentions that the new Hyundai Santro gets a Grand i10-like steering wheel with controls for audio and phone, no touchscreen, black and beige finish, seats with fixed headrests, and power window controls placed behind the gear lever. Also, on the outside, there are high set fog lamps placed just under the headlamps, a prominent black insert in the rear bumper, and a window line with a Honda Mobilio-like kink towards the rear passenger glass.

The new Hyundai Santro is underpinned by a reworked version of the first generation Hyundai i10's platform. It will be offered only with a petrol engine, specifications of which are currently unknown. The AH2 will debut Hyundai's AMT technology that has been developed in-house.

Hyundai is yet to announce the name of the AH2 officially. However, multiple reports indicate that it will be branded as Hyundai Santro.

Hyundai will position the new Santro below the Grand i10 to rival the Tata Tiago, Maruti Wagon R, and Maruti Celerio. Expect prices to start around the INR 3.5 lakh mark for the base petrol manual trim.
