BMW X3 M40d announced; to be available from July this year

The third-gen BMW X3 range was expanded with the introduction of a new variant yesterday - BMW X3 M40d. The BMW X3 M40d is the diesel engine-powered alternative to the BMW X3 M40i. The BMW X3 M40d will reach first markets in July this year.

The BMW X3 M40d sports the B57 3.0-litre diesel engine that produces 326 PS and 680 Nm of torque.

The all-new BMW X3 M40d sports the B57 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel engine that delivers a maximum power of 240 kW (326 PS) and a maximum torque of 680 Nm available from as low as 1,750 rpm. The 8-speed Steptronic sports automatic transmission and the xDrive permanent all-wheel-drive system are included as standard in the M40d variant. In this configuration, the BMW X3 goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds. This means that the X3 M40d is only tenth of a second slower than the X3M40i. The fuel consumption rating varies from 6.5-6.4 l/100 km (15.38-15.63 km/l).

Appearance wise, the BMW X3 M40d is no different from the BMW X3 M40i. It features M Performance-specific design details, which include M Aerodynamics package with Cerium Grey-finish design elements as standard. Also part of the standard specification, are 20-inch alloy wheels, flap-controlled M Sport exhaust system with Black Chrome tailpipe embellishers, M Sport Suspension with M Performance-specific tuning, M Sport brakes and variable sport steering.

The BMW X3 M40d is the seventh engine variant in the third generation BMW X3 range. In India, only the xDrive30d engine model is available currently. The BMW X3 xDrive20d is powered by the 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder diesel engine that produces 140 kW (190 PS) at 4,000 rpm and 400 Nm of torque at 1,750-2,500 rpm. The 8-speed Steptronic automatic transmission and the xDrive permanent all-wheel-drive system work together to send power to the wheels. BMW will introduce a petrol engine model later this year. The company may consider launching the M40d variant to target customers desiring sportier drive and styling.
