Skoda Auto is working on a new crossover that will sit below the Karoq reports Autocar. It will be closely related to the Rapid Spaceback estate that Skoda intends to roll out in 2019. Skoda's new CUV will rival the Nissan Juke.

New Skoda compact SUV render
The upcoming Skoda compact SUV will be based on the Rapid Spaceback and will be an amalgamation of SUV and estate designs.

As the report repeatedly points out, the car will be a mix of estate and crossover designs. It will follow the same styling principles as the recent Skoda SUVs Karoq and Kodiaq including their signature grille design, and similar headlamp and tail lamp profiles.

VW's MQB A0 platform will form the basis of the new Skoda compact SUV. This platform also underpins the Seat Arona and the Volkswagen T-ROC. However, unlike the two compact SUVs that are based on Seat Ibiza and VW Polo hatchbacks respectively, Skoda's crossover will be based on the Rapid Spaceback estate.  Also, it will have a longer wheelbase as well.

Information regarding the powertrain options is scarce at the moment. It may get a choice of VW's 1.0 L and 1.5 L engines. The report suggests there could be hybrid powertrain on offer as well. The new Skoda crossover will be available only in front wheel drive format, at least initially.

Skoda believes SUVs will account for 40% of the total sales volume by 2025.

Skoda plans to put the car into production in 2019. It will go on sale in European markets and will find its way into China as well. Skoda is betting big on the upcoming compact SUV as it believes the contribution of SUVs to total volumes will rise to 40% by 2025.
