Maruti website now only displays prices of petrol variants.

Although Maruti Suzuki is yet to make a formal announcement, it appears that sales of the Maruti Celerio diesel variant have been discontinued. The official website now only displays the petrol variant's price list, and web reports are confirming that the model is not on sale.

Maruti expected to widen the appeal of the Celerio by introducing the diesel variant in 2015.

In Maruti's standards, the Celerio petrol sells in decent numbers, especially the petrol AMT variant which constitutes a substantial portion of the overall sales. Maruti expected to widen the appeal by introducing the diesel variant in 2015, which debuted Maruti's in-house developed 793 cc two-cylinder turbodiesel engine.

However, its poor refinement and lack of oomph (which were also mentioned in our review) put off people from purchasing one. The gradual increase in the price of diesel is also cited as a factor, and the price difference between petrol and diesel has narrowed in the last few years.

Even with massive discounts and good fuel economy reputation, it was not enough for customers to look past the limitations of the diesel motor.

Even with massive discounts and good fuel economy numbers, it was not enough for prospects to look past the limitations of the diesel motor.

The discontinuation of the Celerio diesel leaves the Maruti Swift as the least expensive diesel hatchback in their portfolio. Priced at INR 5.97 Lakhs (Ex-showroom Delhi), it packs the more familiar and proven 1.3 DDiS engine that outputs 75 PS and 190 Nm of torque through a 5-speed manual gearbox.
