Ameo diesel variant is now available for sale.

VW had launched the diesel variant of the Ameo sub-4m sedan in India last week, nearly four months after the VW Ameo petrol went on sale. Here's a brief comparison between the Ameo diesel and rivals like the Maruti Swift Dzire, Honda Amaze, Hyundai Xcent, Tata Zest and Ford Aspire.

The VW Ameo packs an updated version of the 1.5L TDI diesel engine, which produces 110 PS and 250 Nm of torque. This makes it the most powerful sub-4m diesel sedan currently, although the Ameo's power to weight ratio falls short of the Honda Amaze's class-leading figure. As for fuel efficiency, the Maruti Dzire offers the best-in-class mileage, while the Ameo is not as fuel efficient as most of its rivals. The Ford Aspire offers a good balance between power and fuel efficiency.

The Ameo is also not the biggest car in the segment - a distinction that goes to the Tata Zest (although by a small margin). However, it does have one of the longest wheelbases, which translates to better legroom for rear passengers. Boot space, however, is not as big as most of the competition.

Finally, the VW Ameo MT variant's pricing is neck-and-neck with the Ford Aspire, but is less expensive than the Honda Amaze. With the 7-speed DSG option and Highline variant ticked, the Ameo becomes the most expensive sedan in the segment.
