Both will be based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB platform.

The second generation VW Tiguan range will see addition of a stretched, 7-seat version dubbed 'VW Tiguan XL' and a coupe-styled 5-seat version, 'VW Tiguan CC' by 2017. Both are expected to retain the familiar design from the original 5-seat version and with that in mind, renderings by Theophilus Chin give a look at their exterior in near-production guise.

The Tiguan XL will primarily target markets like North America and China.

The VW Tiguan XL has already been confirmed for production at the Puebla plant in Mexico starting end-2016. It is expected to be targeted mainly at North America and China with local production in the latter too, with a more economical, Skoda version focused more on other markets including Europe.

In the two key markets, it will likely be offered only with a 2.0-litre TSI turbocharged petrol engine in varying power outputs. A plug-in hybrid GTE variant seems possible too, with the same powertrain from the VW Passat GTE.

The VW Tiguan CC should be a 4-door coupe in production form.

The VW Tiguan CC, although seen in 3-door form in the rendering, will likely be a 4-door model in production form. Similar in size to the standard 5-door version, the 4-door coupe version is expected to have a raked roofline, and be slightly wider and sit a little lower for a more imposing stance. The coupe version may be offered only with 2.0-litre TSI petrol and TDI diesel engines with outputs ranging from 150 PS (148 hp) to 240 PS (237 hp).
