The 2016 BMW R nineT has gotten two significant updates - heated handlebar grips as an optional add-on/accessory and two hand-brushed exposed aluminium fuel tank choices. The rest of the motorcycle has been carried over from its previous iteration. It continues to be powered by a 1,170 cc air/oil-cooled flat-twin cylinder engine with a central balancer shaft, two camshafts and four radially aligned valves per cylinder. It produces 110 hp at 7,550 rpm and 119 Nm at 6,000 rpm, and is offered with a six-speed gearbox.

The BMW R1200GS uses the R nineT's 1,170 cc boxer engine which is tuned to produce 125 hp at 7,750 rpm and 125 Nm at 6,500 rpm on it. The colour displayed at the Auto Expo is the light white non-metallic option that has replaced the Alpine white non-metallic and the Black stork metallic colours in its 2016 model year (in the US). In the European markets, the 2016 BMW 1200GS gets an optional Ride Modes Pro package which includes the BMW Dynamic Brake Light in conjunction with ABS Pro.
