Engineered with Mercedes’ “Real Life Safety” approach in mind.
The Mercedes GLC has achieved a five-star rating in the crash test conducted by Euro NCAP (New Car Assessment Programme). The car scored five stars in occupant safety, child safety, pedestrian protection and its assistance systems.
Mercedes says that the rating has been made possible by the “perfect interaction between active and passive safety.” The release further states that the “combination of a highly rigid safety passenger cell, highly effective restraint systems, the latest driver assistance systems and other measures leads to first-class test results.”
Mercedes claims it has designed the GLC with real-world accidents in mind and with its “Real Life Safety” approach. This approach is taken by the carmaker’s accident research centres which focus on avoiding accidents completely or mitigate their consequences.
The GLC is endowed with the Intelligent Drive concept which integrates data from various sensors resulting in enhanced safety. Systems that come as standard are collision prevention assist plus, attention assist, crosswind assist and headlamp assist.
Not just occupant safety but safety of people on the road is also given importance. These can include anyone from a pedestrian to a cyclist. Optional safety system BAS PLUS is capable of detecting pedestrians that are in the danger zone around the vehicle through a stereo camera and alert the driver accordingly. PRE-SAFE is another option that applies brakes autonomously if there is no reaction from the driver in spite of the warnings.
The active bonnet feature is also found in the GLC. This feature raises the bonnet height by 80 mm during impact to facilitate additional deformation space. This space is even further optimised under the bonnet which has a new engine cover and deformable air intake.
